Garland ladies learn more about the Bunny Park

Members of the Garland Ladies Luncheon Club were recently taken on a “journey through the Bunny Park”, led by Tania Forrest-Smith.

Forrest-Smith, environmental portfolio-holder on the Ward 27 committee and founder of the Save the Bunny Park Animals group, recently addressed the club during a lunch at the Benoni Country Club.

She gave a brief history of her involvement at the Bunny Park and touched on the most recent developments at the facility.

“I became involved at the park about two years ago, after going there with my grandchild and seeing a bunny with a shard for a leg,” Forrest-Smith said.

“We started with the bunnies, but soon realised the other animals also needed our help.

“All the animals, except the bunnies and some birds, are now on a foster farm while construction goes on at the park.

“They are healthy and happy there now.”

The animal activist explained the background behind the latest news regarding the park, which is that Save the Bunny Park Animals and Ban Animal Trading (Bat) are suing the metro on the grounds of being in contempt of court.

“We reached a settlement with the Ekurhuleni metro last year, and for a period, it worked well between us, but it didn’t last.

“Most recently we were locked out of the park, as it was said to be a construction site.

“Because of this we can’t get to the colonies further into the park, only those that are close to the fence.”

In closing, Forrest-Smith said the volunteers always need donations of food for the animals.
