Former deputy principal and wife assaulted at home

Former Laerskool Rynfield deputy principal Peet Peens (74) and his wife Ina (68) were tied up and assaulted in their Rynfield home on June 14.

According to the couple’s son, Werner Peens, his father was working in the garden at around 11am when the intruders lifted the gate off its rail and entered the property.

“They overpowered my dad while he was in the garden and took him inside,” Peens said.

“They beat my mother and father and tied them up.”

Peens said the perpetrators made off with several items, as well as the couple’s car.

He said his parents remained tied up until 3pm, when their domestic helper arrived at the house for her afternoon shift, after which she called CMS.

“They were cruelly assaulted, basically tortured,” Peens added.

“We still don’t know all the details, as my father doesn’t remember much, while my mom remembers bits every now and then.”

Peens said his parents went to the intensive care unit at Netcare Linmed Hospital, but were moved from the unit since and are slowly recovering.

Peet retired from Laerskool Rynfield in March 2015, after 50 years with the school.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, the Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said three suspects entered the property.

A case of house robbery and assault was opened.

No arrests had been made at the time of publishing.
