Metro action and SAPS investigation put him away

Wiseman Ncoko was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Ncoko was sentenced at the Benoni Regional Court by Magistrate Ian Cox on June 9.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said it is alleged the victim was on her way from her workplace to the bank to deposit money on August 5, 2016.

“Ncoko appeared from the opposite direction and pointed at her with the firearm and took cash to the value of R19 424, then fled the scene,” said Sekele.

“A metro police officer, who was driving along Prince’s Avenue, heard the lady screaming and running after the suspect, then he took it upon himself to assist, and gave chase.”

Sekele added that Ncoko stopped running, took out a firearm and pointed it at the metro officer, who managed to overpower and disarm him.

Ncoko was then arrested.

Further investigation by Det-Sgt Donavon Naicker revealed that Ncoko was previously arrested for a similar matter and was out on parole.

Ncoko was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and five years for being in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Benoni SAPS station commander Brig Johan Jacobs applauded the metro officer and Naicker for a job well done and for helping to ensure that Benoni is kept safe.

Ncoko is serving his sentence in Modderbee Prison.
