Wheels within wheels on bin issue

G Kramer, of Rynfield, writes:

I am in total agreement with resident John Turner that the municipality has not considered the many negative effects on our Benoni community regarding the wheelie bin issue.

As a further example, we have been using two purchased Mpact wheelie bins for a number of years, as it suited us.

However, now the refuse staff have informed us that because they do not have the municipal logo, they will no longer collect [rubbish from] them.

How crazy is that?

Our bins are identical to the municipal ones except that they do not have a municipal logo, which obviously has no effect whatsoever regarding practicality, hygiene or capacity.

Furthermore, despite collecting from both bins every week for years, they will only collect from one weekly, apparently.

Also, as we have been putting all our plastic refuse in a separate bag outside with the bins, we do not have a problem with scattered rubbish and so suggest residents consider this option to ensure a clean pavement and street outside their home.

Finally, as they are public servants paid by our rates, it is totally unacceptable that the municipality does not respond to the various valid concerns raised publicly regarding this wheelie bin matter, despite being requested to do so.

They are therefore accountable to ratepayers for what is obviously an illogical, costly and not a practical, decision in many aspects.

Editor’s note:

The City Times has previously quoted the metro’s comment in which it was said that waste will only be collected if it is in a marked municipal bin, explaining that it is done to allow for proper control of the system as they are then able to determine who is paying for a bin and who is not.

The municipality has also previously said that people can have more than one bin, although residents will be charged monthly for each bin under the refuse collection fee.
