Fear not a factor for Stokroos Street man as he comes face to face with three hijackers

Fear was not a factor for Northmead resident Derek Bagshaw, who refused to be a hijacking victim.

Bagshaw was leaving his home on Stokroos Street at 5.30am on Monday morning when his car was blocked at his driveway by a white VW Golf with three occupants.

“My wife was closing the gate and was about to jump into the car when two of the three suspects got out of their car and walked towards my car,” he said.

“She then shouted ‘Derek, hijacking’, and ran towards the house.”

But Bagshaw did not go down without a fight.

“I reacted by reversing my car into theirs,” he said.

“The back of my car damaged the door of their car.

“I then put my car in first gear and went forward, then reversed a second time.”

Bagshaw tried to repeat this after putting his car in first gear again, but struggled to do so.

“By this time, one of the suspect’s had opened my car door and attempted to hit me,” he said.

“This angered me; I got out of my car and punched him and he fell to the ground.

“I did not see the other suspect, who was standing behind their car, until he said that he was going to shoot me.”

After hearing this, Bagshaw dived to the ground and the criminal fired a round, but missed him.

“The suspects jumped back into their car and drove off,” he added.

Bagshaw said he does not consider himself a hero, but he stood up for what is his.

“We, as hard workers, work for the things that belong to us, and it is not fair that criminals just take it,” he said.

“A stolen item is just an item to them, but it has sentimental value to the person it belongs to.”

The Northmead resident added that he will not take it lightly when someone steals what belongs to him or tries to hurt his family.

“I have been in a situation where I was in a store when an armed robbery happened,” he said.

“I am tired of crime.”

According to Bagshaw, street lights in the area have not been working for a while, and it would be more safe if they were working.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said an attempted hijacking case was opened.

No arrests have yet been made.
