The school was officially opened in 1957 by Mr Valentine, with 337 learners and 10 teachers.
The original school consisted of the administration block, the hall, the Grade Two block and the senior block, although only the upstairs classrooms were used.
Current headmistress Lynnette Cuthbertson said a woman by the name of Jill Fischer, who did her Grade One at the school when it opened, emailed her to say that all the Grade Ones were given trees to plant to celebrate the opening of the school.
“Fischer planted a flowering quince near the bottom gate,” said Cuthbertson.
In 1991, as per parents’ vote, the school apparently became a model B school, as well as the first school in Benoni to accept learners of all races.
From 1993, M Palmer was the principal until Joe Erasmus took over in 1998.
In 2007, the school built a technology centre for the foundation phase learners and the next year (2008) a junior computer and media centre was built, together with an art centre for the senior learners.
In 2010, Cuthbertson was appointed as the headmistress.
Cuthbertson said it’s been a special journey to travel with the learners and teachers.
“The school has grown over the years and it has grown very close to my heart.”
