Vehicles go up in flames during Daveyton protest

Four vehicles were torched in a Daveyton protest this morning (May 26).

Residents of Mayfield, in Daveyton, took to the streets to demonstrate against being moved to a different area.

The protest started at about 3am.

The streets were strewn with burning tyres, concrete and stones, hampering vehicle movement.

The protesters were also reportedly stopping residents from going to school and work.

According to Putfontein SAPS acting station commander, Capt Thabo Mutsi, the residents were supposed to be moved to Extension Nine, but they refused to go.

A case of public violence has been opened at the Putfontein Police Station.

No arrests have been made.

Police and EMPD are monitoring the situation.
