From Benoni to… Michigan

Prof Adrian Blow (52) went to the United States of America to further his studies, but ended up staying.

The father of six does not forsee leaving his “beautiful country”.

BCT: Tell us about your time in Benoni.

AB: I lived in Benoni from age seven to 20.

I grew up in Putfontein on a five acre plot.

I lived in Rynfield, on Miles Sharp Street, and attend Rynfield Primary and Benoni High schools.

BCT: When did you emigrate to the USA?

AB: I emigrated in 1993.

I first lived in Texas, then in Indiana, then Missouri, and have lived in Michigan for 12 years.

I initially came to the USA to further my education; I obtained my PhD from Purdue University, in Indiana.

BCT: What is your profession?

AB: I work at Michigan State University.

Michigan State is a large state with about 45 000 students.

I research families and trauma and direct the couple and family therapy programme at the university.

BCT: What do you love about the USA?

AB: The USA is a beautiful country with a diverse range of experiences.

There are beautiful places: lakes, mountains, oceans, rivers, beaches, to name a few.

I have travelled all over and am impressed by the large size of the USA and the diverse natural wonders.

I enjoy the safety of the USA, the number of opportunities available and the affordable cost of living.

BCT: What are your memories of Benoni?

AB: As a boy, I used to enjoy fishing in the dams around town.

I enjoyed playing golf at The Lake Club Benoni and the Benoni Country Club.

I enjoyed attending Rynfield Primary and Benoni High schools.

I remember hanging out at Northmead Mall, playing soccer for Old Bens and going to the movies at the Constantia movie theatre.

BCT: Would you advise others to emigrate?

AB: Yes, if the correct opportunity arises.

My family in South Africa live fulfilled lives.

Emigration is not easy; it takes years to adjust.

I have met many who emigrated who are unhappy with their new life.

BCT: What South African traditions do you still enjoy in the States?

AB: Mostly food; I have braais regularly.

I eat curry and rice weekly, and enjoy roast lamb and other roasts in the South African tradition.

I also watch soccer and rugby.

Do you know a former Benonian now living overseas?

If so, we’d like to interview them.
