Couple calls for blanket donations

After a successful Blanket Drive 2016 for Melissa and Shaun Haripersad, the couple are asking for assistance to make a warmer winter possible again for the homeless in Benoni.

The Haripersads are Northmead residents who were bothered by the homeless sleeping in the cold, so they held their first Blanket Drive in 2016 where they gave 215 blankets to homeless people.

These blankets were donated by several people.

“Winter is upon us again and many of us are lucky enough to have heaters, electric blankets, hot running water and the facilities to make hot drinks whenever we are cold,” Melissa said.

“But there are also some who are not as lucky and have to sleep on cardboard boxes on the street or beg for money just to save up enough for a hot cup of coffee.”

This year, the couple hope to hand out 250 blankets with the help of their fellow Benonians.

“We are hosting a blanket drive on June 3 and urge the community to please support this initiative,” Melissa added.

“Members of the community may contribute by donating any used/old blankets.

“Alternatively, you may support through funding as we have found blankets at R75 each, which will be purchased as and when funding is received.

“But, donations of any kind are welcome.”
