Old Bens pick up six points in three days

Old Bens Football Club’s first XI enjoyed two differing winning results in their respective Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League matches on Freedom Day (Thursday, April 27) and Saturday, April 29.

On Thursday, Bens dished out a 12-0 hiding at Currin Park against a hapless Corinthians side.

The same opponent went down by the same score-line against Benoni Northerns Football Club at the start of the campaign.

Coach Raymond Cloete’s men then followed up that rout with a nervy 2-1 away win over Boksburg Football Club on Saturday.

After conceding an early penalty to go 1-0 down Bens fought tooth and nail to put the ball past their opponent’s goalkeeper and according to the coach, “it seemed like it was just going to be one of those days where we wouldn’t score”.

Cloete took a gamble as the match was approaching its climax and introduced his son Jethson from the substitute’s bench as a striker.

The move paid huge dividends, because the veteran player became a super sub as he scored two volleyed goals to seal the late win.

The victory was Old Bens’ third successive win in the league.

Their winning league momentum will be put on ice, though, as they have two bye matches over the next two weekends.
