More time to collect your wheelie bins

There will be another wheelie bin roll-out in Benoni, according to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

This was confirmed late Monday afternoon.

Ward 23 councillor André du Plessis said this will delay the May 1 deadline that the municipality gave the public by which they need to collect a container from 4 Golden Drive, Morehill.

The deadline would have started the official switch to the collection of refuse in the 240l receptacles.

People have been directed to the depot, which concerned many who aren’t able to collect the wheelie bins, especially the elderly.

On April 20, du Plessis said he received information from metro officials that another roll-out would be implemented.

This comes after the councillor criticised last year’s roll-out, which spanned two weekends, saying there was insufficient communication from the municipality and not enough bins to allow for all residents to obtain a container.

“I am happy to announce that I was given an undertaking by the acting Head of Department as well as the Member of the Mayoral Committee that the department will address the further roll-out of wheelie bins in Benoni within the fourth quarter of this financial year and the first quarter of the next financial year,” said du Plessis.

“It will be done over a weekend, but the dates and venues still need to be determined.

“However, they will require residents to communicate with their councillors and allow the councillor to compile a list of how many residents in their wards still require bins in order for the depot to plan and have the correct allocations available on the days that the further roll-outs will take place in the various Benoni suburbs.”
