Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster SAPS commander, previously said three taxi operators were injured in the incident which happened after 6pm.
Further investigations revealed it was three bystanders.
Subbiah said an operational manager from a taxi association was confronted by two men who opened fire on him, but he fled and escaped injury.
“During the shooting three bystanders were injured in the gunfire,” said Subbiah.
He said police responded soon after the shooting.
“An off-duty SAPS member of the Task Team was in the area and responded,” said Subbiah.
“He managed to fatally shoot one of the suspected hitmen.
“One managed to escape.”
The injured were taken to hospital in a serious condition.
A 9mm pistol used by the alleged shooter was recovered on scene.
An inquest docket, cases of murder, attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition has been opened.
The motive is unclear.
