“The farmer said they’re all very happy there,” said Tania Forrest-Smith, committee member of the Ward 27 environment portfolio.
“All the birds are also gone, except some Egyptian geese and five peacocks – they refuse to leave the park.
“The pigs will remain at the park, as the construction won’t affect them.
“This has never happened before – it is a historic moment.”
Forrest-Smith said the construction work at the park can’t begin until all the bunnies have been adopted.
She is worried that the pace of sterilising the bunnies won’t keep up with the speed of procreation at the facility.
At this point, 1 200 have been adopted, of which 400 were sterilised.
Clr Jacques Meiring (Ward 27) said the revamp project is still on target, though the department of parks and cemeteries will have to speed up the process of sterilising the bunnies and putting them up for adoption.
The park closed on March 1, for the revamp to start.
The refurbishment project is expected to last until at least July.
Save the Bunny Park Animals, a group founded by Forrest-Smith, will continue feeding the bunnies at the park.
Forrest-Smith said they need donations of food, especially pellets, for the bunnies.
