Call for another wheelie bin roll-out

The DA in Benoni is pushing for a second roll-out of wheelie bins in the town.

This comes after the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) notified the City Times that people have until the end of April to collect the 240l receptacles.

As of May 1, the metro will no longer collect waste that is not in the bins.

“Waste in the Benoni area will be collected using the high level bin lifter vehicles,” said EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

“Waste in black refuse bags will no longer be collected due the waste trucks’ heightened structure.”

Ward 23 Clr André du Plessis, who is also the DA spokesperson on the environmental development oversight portfolio, said last year’s two-weekend long roll-out was insufficient.

He said the metro was late in arriving at the point on the first weekend, and did not arrive on the second weekend.

The councillor said bins also ran short.

“The entire suburb of Goedeburg has not received any bins either,” said du Plessis.

Councillors Jacques Meiring (Ward 27) and Malanie Haggard (Ward 28) shared du Plessis’s sentiment, with all three saying people do not have time to collect bins during the week.

“Why did they not encourage people in January to collect bins, now suddenly there is a deadline,” said Haggard.

She said the metro is guilty of bad planning.

“If it was a smooth roll-out there would not have been a problem, but it was absolute chaos,” Haggard said.

Du Plessis said he is awaiting information from the EMM on whether another roll-out will take place.

At this stage, bins may only be collected from the depot at 4 Golden Drive, from 7am until 3pm from Monday to Friday.

Bins stolen

The City Times received numerous comments on the Benoni City Times Facebook page of people saying their bins have been stolen.

The metro told the newspaper last year that if a bin is stolen, the owner would need to open a case and forward it to the municipality’s call centre to have it replaced “immediately”.

If they are satisfied that it has been stolen, you will receive a new one at no cost.
