K9 Unit visits Toddler Town

The Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit visited the children at Toddler Town in Crystal Park on March 17.

The dogs are trained to sniff out explosives and guns.

Lazaro Kilino demonstrated what his German Shepherd, Matt (6), does when sniffing for explosives.

According to Lorraine Claassen, the operational clerk at the Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit, there are six dogs that are part of the unit.

Tshwarano Malope (6) celebrates her birthday with Matt (6) from the Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit.

“The dogs are trained for three months before they can start working,” said Claassen.

“We have companies that call us in to check their cargo on a regular basis and then we get calls from the airport as well.”

The purpose of the visit was to teach children that dogs are not just pets, but that they are also trained to work within the community.

Lazaro Kilino stands with Matt (6) while Lorraine Claassen helps Tshwarano Malope (6) pet the dog.
