Strong performances at canoe polo championships

The SA Canoe Polo Championships were held on March 11 and 12, at Homestead Dam.

“It was one of the best SA Champs held so far with good quality, hard games being played across the divisions,” said South African Canoe Polo chairman, Chris de Bree.

“The standard of polo being played in the women’s game, won by the KwaZulu-Natal team, makes the future of women’s canoe polo look good.”

The Western Cape team won the u-15 division, while Gauteng ended on top in the open men’s division.

The u-21 men’s category was all level at the end of the pool stages with the three teams only separated by goal difference.

“The men’s category was, as always, a fierce contest between KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng,” de Bree said.

“The two teams drew one and won one each over the course of the weekend.

“The decider was won by Gauteng who managed to put together a high tempo game, capitalising on KwaZulu-Natal’s errors and regaining the title they lost last year.

“Gauteng won a thrilling golden goal game in the final against KwaZulu-Natal.”

Benonian Nicholas Weeks was in the men’s Gauteng team that won the tournament.
