Shortages don’t stop woman from delivering post

After irregular postal deliveries, Northmead residents Robert Goodwin and Alexia Abnett received their post in a bakkie from an employee at the post office.

“I complained on March 9 to a woman who works at the post office at Northmead Square,” Abnett said.

“We have been receiving irregular deliveries for two years and important letters are not being delivered on time.”

According to Abnett, the employee from the Northmead Square post office told her that there is a shortage of postmen at the moment.

“I want to know how the postman decides which letters are of urgency to be delivered first,” Abnett said.

“And where do the undelivered letters go?”

Abnett added that after complaining, the woman from the post office called her a few hours later and asked for her address.

“She then personally dropped off 13 letters using a bakkie,” Abnett said.

Paul Fouché, regional manager in the Witwatersrand, said the delivery from the employee is commendable.

“It is because of employees of this calibre that the post office still plays a vital role in the infrastructure,” Fouché added.

“We must point out that the issue is temporary and mail delivery in the area will be back to normal within weeks.”

According to Fouché, there are 800 delivery points per postman in the area.

“The appointment of extra postmen has not been completed, however and until then, delivery will only take place twice a week,” he said.

“Once there are more postmen, the frequency of deliveries will increase.”
