Mother and daughter celebrate double success

Like mother, like daughter; empowering others is what drives them.

Mother and daughter Madelain and Shannon Roscher have walked away with the honours at the 2017 Woman of Stature Awards, at Emperors Palace on March 11.

Madelain won the Woman in Media category while her daughter was recognised as the Youth Ambassador of the Year.

Madelain is managing director of PR Worx, which was established in 2001.

According to Madelain, the company’s out-of-the-box ideas generate extensive media coverage, stakeholder exposure and tangible results that receive both local and international awards.

Shannon, a former Lakefield resident and Benoni High School learner, is the co-founder of DeskBags, founded in 2012.

DeskBags are functional, ecofriendly school bags that provide a portable desk solution.

“The bag allows the child to carry his or her schoolbooks and stationery safely to and from school, while the flap, which is reinforced with durable Perspex, becomes an instant, durable desk when unfolded,” said Shannon.

“These bags are made from the vinyl of recycled billboards and are strong; if looked after well, they can last a whole school career.”

The bags are waterproof, reflective and light enough for pre-primary learners to use.

Shannon said she is overwhelmed by the recognition.

“I was really grateful to be nominated and I wasn’t expecting to win,” she said.

“This is a stamp of approval that South Africa believes in DeskBags, as much as DeskBags believes in SA.”

She added that this will open doors to do bigger things for DeskBags.

The 25-year-old said her next step is to extend the brand into Africa.

During an interview with the City Times, Shannon said DeskBags have created jobs for previously disadvantaged women and men who are either disabled or unemployed or, in many instances, have suffered abused further into Africa.

Her mother said it’s an honour to have won the Woman in Media category.

“I was surprised to hear my mane announced as a winner as the competition was tough,” said Madelain.

When asked how she feels about Shannon’s achievement, she said her daughter is one of the strongest women she knows.

“She is an inspiration to me; I think from a very young age I’ve taught Shannon the value of making a difference to others,” she said.

“This award will open doors for DeskBags and people will realise how powerful and committed Shannon is to helping others.

Madelain has always believed in empowering other women and through the association with Woman of Stature she will mentor and guide others beyond her team and clients.
