UPDATE: Barry’s machines to be switched off

The machines that have been keeping Barry McCallum alive will be switched off today, according to his brother’s Facebook page.

“The machines that go ping will be switched off in a while,” said Kevin at around 10.15am this morning (March 9).

“Those machines have been keeping him alive since Monday night, but the cardiac arrest and the battle to bring him back from the brink was too much for Barry to handle.

“His brain was starved of oxygen for too long.

“Tests confirmed there was no brain function.

“The last test was done this morning.”

Barry sustained serious burns in Western Extension on February 20 after starting his Opel Corsa, which went up in flames at his Newton Avenue home.

Kevin said his brother sustained 50 to 70 per cent burns on his body, ranging from first degree to third degree burns.

Barry and Kevin worked at the City Times in the ’90s.
