A passion for caring

Sindisiwe Mdlalose is the patient care manager at Hospice East Rand.

The Boksburg resident dedicates her time to patient caring, compassion and respecting the values of each individual under her care.

Sindisiwe prides herself on ensuring that excellent and appropriate standards are maintained in all nursing, psychological and training services provided at Hospice East Rand.

Why did you become a nurse?

Generally, I am a soft spoken person, which is good for people who are not talkative. My personality helps me to better listen to people, which does not happen much these days. The nursing industry is also my calling.

What were you doing before you joined hospice?

I was a nurse at various private clinics. I am involved in palliative care, which is more specialised.

What is the biggest challenge you face on a daily basis?

It can be upsetting to care for people who are dying and some of the patients admitted to hospice have not had the appropriate medical and care management for their illness. It is, however, fulfilling to know that palliative care is holistic and is of a high standard.

What is your role at Hospice East Rand?

I ensure standards are met, I supervise and support professional nurses, psycho-social and care workers and co-ordinate services at hospice.

Where do you see yourself in a few years?

I plan to continue working for Hospice East Rand and hope to make a mark on the organisation and people who are cared for by the nurses. I plan to network with other organisations to share best practice and advocate for patients and families to receive quality care while they are afflicted by life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses. It is important to ensure death is experienced with dignity.

What inspires you?

Knowing that I have made a difference in a person’s life.

What is your favourite thing to do in your spare time?

I listen to gospel music and do hand craft activities with my friends at church on planned Saturday afternoons.

What advice do you have for young nurses who are starting their careers?

Patient care is about compassion, caring, communication and treating people with courtesy and empathy. Above and beyond this, you need to live according to the values that healthcare professionals stand for.
