The 100% Foundation seeks assistance

Non-profit organisation (NPO) The 100% Foundation is calling upon like-minded organisations to join them in empowering the lives of underprivileged communities.

The foundation, which was co-founded by Zina Rotherham and Murray Hewlett (current CEO of Affinity Health in Benoni), is based in Rynfield.

Prior to the NPO, Rotherham spent many years as a flight attendant in the aviation industry until she left, due to several reasons.

In 2015 she was drawn into the non-profit world and joined Affinity Health as their corporate social responsibility manager.

“I was transported from days filled with high heels, fashion and selfies to the far from glamorous world of poverty and need that many South Africans experience on a daily basis,” Rotherham said.

“The first time I visited the N12 informal settlement my eyes were opened to a way of life that many choose to pretend doesn’t exist.

“I could not believe that communities such as this manage to survive with no basic sanitation nor infrastructure; toilets, warm water and electricity.”

According to Rotherham, The 100% Foundation carefully works with and manages all donations to ensure that every cent makes a meaningful impact.

“Every rand donated is dispersed to the needy and no funds are kept aside to be used for administration or other hidden costs, hence the name – The 100% Foundation,” said Rotherham.

Through 2017, The 100% Foundation aims to improve the quality of education offered to foundation phase of children’s lives (two to six years).

“One of our main areas of focus is Chief Albert Luthuli N12 settlement,” Rotherham said.

“It is a community of resilient and friendly people who have been hugely disappointed by the false promises of housing.

“Portable toilets have been provided by government and are serviced twice a week with roughly 10 dwellings sharing one toilet.

“The community has no access to electricity and therefore there is no lighting other than candles or paraffin lamps.”

The foundation would also like to provide solar lighting as a solution.

“I am investigating an efficient, cost-effective lighting solution provided by an organisation called Litreoflight,” said Rotherham.
