Parent seeks placement for son in school

Although schools have been open for over a month, a concerned father has notified the City Times that his son has not been placed in a school.

Patrick Matati relocated from Johannesburg to Benoni in December.

The Woburn Avenue resident attempted to enrol his seven-year-old son, Sibusiso Ndlovu, at Benoni Junior School, but he was told the school had reached full capacity.

“This was an unexpected move and I was hoping we would find a school for him,” said Matati.

Matati then approached the Ekurhuleni North Department of Education for assistance.

“I have gone to the department and found no joy,” he said.

Matati has resorted to taking his son to the library daily for the time being.

He is also considering home-schooling his son for the year and applying once again when school applications open.

“It is very frustrating for all of us at home,” the father said.

According to Gauteng Department of Education’s acting spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe, the department is engaging with the parent with a view to placing the child in a school where space is available.

“It must be noted that this is a late application as the parents have recently relocated to the area,” said Bodibe.

“It is the responsibility of the department to ensure that every school-going age child is accommodated in our schools.”

The department has requested all schools to develop catch-up plans for all learners who applied late, so that they are not disadvantaged.
