Benoni SAPS spokesperson Const Zunickha Essakjee said a man drove down New Modder Road, when he stopped on the side of the road to speak on a cellphone.
“He was approached by four males,” said Essakjee.
She said one of the four men was armed and demanded the driver open the car’s doors.
Valuables, including several cellphones and a laptop, were stolen.
The robbers fled on foot.
The spokesperson said similar incidents around New Modder Road, have taken place in the past few months.
She said the area is known to be used by prostitutes, meaning robbers might known that some motorists stop in the area.
Essakjee said motorists who need to stop for whatever reason, should try do so in built-up areas; especially at night.
She urged drivers to make use of hands-free devices.
