What Benoni police need you to know before year-end

While local police will be out in full force over the December break, they've asked the public to be on alert as some crimes may increase due to the holiday period.

Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster commander, said the public should heed the following:

House breakings

The commander said people must do the following to minimise chances of their homes being broken into:

• Ask somebody to keep an eye on your property and to empty your post box at home. Potential criminals may think you’re not home if they see a box filled with post.

• Have your lawn cut, before you depart for your holiday destination. The neatly-kept lawn may make criminals think that somebody has been home recently.

• Activate alarms and inform your security company that you’re away. Subbiah said the security company should hopefully conduct more patrols.

• Don’t share holiday plans with people whom you don’t trust. He said criminals keep tabs on social media and may see information about a vacant house.

Bank followings

Subbiah said people should keep withdrawals secret – and not discuss when and what amount of money they’ll draw.

“If salaries have to be paid, rather let it be done electronically or in a protected environment,” he added.

“People need to stop flashing money.”

Although he said bank followings are currently “not of concern”, he warned against the temptation of talking to strangers in banks, as they may be ‘spotters’ who pass information on to robbers.

ATMs

“Don’t accept assistance from anyone,” Subbiah urged.

“It’s so easy to believe somebody and to be convinced that he/she is truly helpful.

“A gentleman in a suit might not necessarily be an innocent person.”

Drunk driving

Subbiah said police will work with the EMPD, Gautrans, the CPF (in some cases) and the office of the MEC of community safety, to arrest drunk drivers.

Police will target roads around areas that are known to be drinking spots.

Remote and vehicle tracker jamming

Subbiah said more cases of jamming may occur, as more people will visit shopping centres.

“People have to double check that cars are being locked,” he said.
