Animal neglect is of concern

“Concerned animal lover” writes:

I am writing in response to an article published in the newspaper dated December 9, headlined ‘Walking skeleton’, monkeys seized in Northmead.

I need to thank the SPCA for the work they do, such as rescuing animals in need that cannot speak for themselves.

It is with utter disgrace that I saw the article in the City Times about the dog that was confiscated from a house in Seventh Avenue, Northmead.

I am pleased to learn that someone from the community reported the matter to the SPCA.

Hopefully this act will encourage other community members to do the same when required to do so.

Unfortunately the photo of the emaciated dog placed with the article does not reflect the seriousness of the matter.

There are more horrific photos on the SPCA’s Facebook page.

What is even more disgraceful is that, according to the SPCA, the owner’s excuse for not looking after the animal was that they did not have money. However, it does not cost anything to keep the area clean in which the animals are kept and the cost for providing clean water is minimal.

Sorry, but in my mind there is no excuse for keeping an animal in such terrible conditions.

Clearly the owner does not love animals and the privilege to own any pet should be taken away.

There are many South African animal lovers that would like to keep pets, but because they know they cannot afford to care for them properly, they rather do not keep pets.

What example do these people set to the younger generation?

The message currently given to children is: It is fine to neglect your pet by not caring for it.

To the SPCA, keep up the good work – for the sake of the animals.
