Cancer survivors strut their stuff

Cancer support initiative Touched By An Angel collaborated with The Real Bling, a clothing and accessories shop at The Square at Farrarmere, to present the Summer Fashion Fantasy Fundraiser, on November 19.

A fashion show was presented, in which all the models who graced the runway were cancer survivors.

The proceeds of the event went towards Touched By An Angel, an organisation run by cancer patients and survivors.

They pay visits to oncology centres, hospitals and homes, to make contact with those suffering from the life-threatening disease.

The initiative is aimed at providing love and support to cancer patients and their families.

With the funds raised, Touched By An Angel buys and gifts patients with scarves, beanies, blankets, bed socks, pillows and drainage bags, for post-operation use.

The models at the fashion fund-raiser are all cancer survivors. Seen wearing The Real Bling’s floral collection are (from left): Angie Nichol, Leonora Badenhorst, Pat Wallace, Lolly Neveling, Lynn Goodwin, Betty van Niekerk and Mary Coule.

“We may not cure our patients, but we can provide love and support in their darkest hours,” said Sheena Williamson, of the organisation.

“Knowing that we can make just a small difference to someone’s life is what gets us going.”

Williamson headed the cancer support organisation for 12 years and, even though she has announced her retirement, she will continue to be an activist against cancer, as she is a survivor herself.

The organisation will now be run by Cheryl Wesson, who is also a cancer survivor.
