Goby’s work does not go unnoticed

Western Extension resident and former Ward 28 councillor, Mary Goby, is still making waves in Benoni and the East Rand Business Women (ERBW) have recognised that.

Goby received the Community Builder of the Year award at the ERBW annual gala, held at the Birchwood Hotel and O R Tambo Conference Centre, on November 12.

Initially she was nominated for the Corporate Business Woman of the Year.

“I was shocked at first, as I didn’t even know about it,” Goby said.

“But afterwards, I was really honoured that all my work is getting recognised.

“Due to all the charity work I do and the community involvement, I’m very honoured to have received this.”

Goby said a number of aspects came into play, with regards to her receiving the award.

“It’s partially due to my council work, but I’ve always done charity work and given to the community,” she said.

“I am also in my third year of being chairperson of The Greater Benoni Child Welfare.”

Currently, Goby works as Project and Development Officer at The 100% Foundation.

“I assist with project co-ordination and fund-raising for the NPOs that we support; and help with ideas for projects and to see them through,” she said.

“There’s also the fund-raising part, where my plan is to approach small and medium-size businesses that have an interest in building the community – to join forces with us to bring education and food security to the disadvantaged.”

Goby reminisced on several community successes she was involved in, including:

• The Gogo Drive – when she collects blankets, hot water bottles and cup of soups to hand out to the elderly.

• Collection of items for victims of a shack fire.

• Helping to install “enviro-loos”, a new classroom and a jungle gym at an informal pre-school in Chief Albert Luthuli Park.

She hopes this award will inspire the community to realise that as a community, people need to give back.

“Success is seeing the expression on faces, when you give people things we take for granted,” Goby concluded.
