For decades I had seen the remnants of old railway lines in the East Rand and wondered about their origins and life.
Even in a young, diverse country like South Africa, history is so important and the network of mines around the Witwatersrand in many ways formed today’s society.
Readers may be interested to know that the locomotive on display was one of a type known internationally as the “Benoni” type that was also supplied to other countries in the world for service in mines.
New Zealand immediately springs to mind.
