BLOG: Come braai with me – LG’s top three spots to have a braai in Benoni

Logan Green, sports journalist, writes:

Man, there is absolutely nothing like an old fashioned braai to get a South African as happy and excited as a Maltese poodle when its owner arrives home.

This ain’t no American-style barbecue either!

In fact, in South Africa, the only barbecue we know is the flavour of chips.

Mmmm… Fritos!

This is a no-nonsense, beer-intensive, rugby-watching, chip n dippin’, potato salad overindulging, sokkie jolling (not me though, I’ll rather leave the indoor wind surfing to the professionals), war-story sharing Benoni braai, boet!

Bring your buddies, a bag of billies, a bottle of Richelieu or Klippies and let’s gooi some serious mielies.

And, yes… we can indeed grill some mielies, too!

It’s not Braai Day today, every day is Braai Day!

:) :)

The other day a pal who recently relocated to B-Town threw a random question at me: “Where are some cool spots to have a braai in Benoni?”

I pondered for a moment or two… hmmm…

There are actually some pretty cool spots in the City of Lakes to make a fire, cook some meat and have a proper jol – besides my usual Rynfield backyard vibes (give me a buzz if you plan on braaing with me though please ;) ).

So, other than my Rynfield garden above here are some schweeeeeeeeet and probably extremely obvious venues for a Benoni braai (There are also some dodgy spots that I won’t mention… cough, cough – Danie Taljaard Park).:

Homestead Dam

It has just got to be number one on the list.

If you are a Benonian then you have most definitely braaied some vleis at our beloved Homestead Dam.

If you attended Benoni High School you probably got a little bit sauced up there during Matric 40 days.

Anyway, a boerie roll with accompanying ice cold brew always goes down well at this local chill spot.

Pop in there over a weekend and you will see exactly what I am taking about.

Even folks from as far as Springs get their passports stamped and enjoy the serenity and beauty provided at the dam almost every weekend (just throw your litter away please, folks).

Oh, and the sunsets?

Majestic as… um… fudge!

See what I mean?

Benoni Northerns Sports Club

There’s nothing like braaing some grub watching some good local club sport.

A braai at “The North” always goes down well.

The club’s Scimitar Bar and beer garden is an awesome spot to purchase and then chug down some liquid refreshments while braaing some meat and watching sport.

It’s definitely one of my faves!

A game of cricket with a braai is always magical.

Other sporty braai venues include Old Bens Sports Grounds and Sahara Park Willowmoore (when some good cricket matches are on).

CR Swart Park/Rynfield Dam – East Rand Speedboat Club

There is a seriously lekker facility at the East Rand Speedboat Club at CR Swart Park/Rynfield Dam.

Another sporty venue the CR Swart Park offers views of the fancy mansions of Ebotse Golf and Country Estate (across the pond) and offers the chance to watch speedboat enthusiasts doing their thing.

If you have your own boat then that is even better for a high quality day of boating and braaing.

These folks from back in the day clearly knew that the park is one of the Benoni places to be for a braai:

These are my top three locations for a braai in B-Town and I am sure there are many more, comment below to share some of your favourite Benoni braai locations and I would be super keen to try them out.

Happy braaing, Benoni.
