Using her talents to help others

Farrarmere resident Nonhlanhla Mdluli is making waves all the way from Benoni, as a vibrant artist, entrepreneur, fashionista and founder of Every Girl Has A Dream (EGHAD).

BCT: Why did you choose to start EGHAD?

NM: EGHAD was birthed because, as a young girl it was not easy for me, as I was raised by a single mom, Phillipa Radebe.

I didn’t allow my circumstances to define me; no girls and young women should.

BCT: What is EGHAD all about?

NM: My message is, no matter how hard it gets, don’t ever give up.

Every Girl Has A Dream is a national non-profit organisation that facilitates fun, and positive mentoring programmes for young women.

Our mission is to empower girls and young women to reach their dreams and their full potential.

We encourage their ambition and empower their confidence, but, most of all, the mentees and mentors in our programme are shown the power of sisterhood, community and self-love.

We choose inspirational role models to encourage and inspire young women to activate their dreams through the speakers’ stories.

BCT: Tell us about your life apart from being the founder of EGHAD?

NM: My mom taught me that the beginning of all wisdom is to love God; she taught me about the power of faith and never to give up on my dreams.

I’m the youngest in my family, having four siblings, three brothers and a sister, Maurice, Sipho, Bhungane and Judith Radebe.

I studied music at Eastside College in 2004 and got my diploma in 2006.

I have two children, Musa (13) and Thando (10), and my husband, Thabo Mdluli, is also a singer and radio personality.

We released an album in 2011 called the Love Worship.

I also have my own clothing line, called Nstar Creation.

BCT: You are 36 years old and are already an artist, designer and mentor, what are your hobbies?

NM: I enjoy drawing and making others look and feel good about the way they look, so I love doing make-up and makeovers.

My future plans and dreams are to take Every Girl Has A Dream global, to reach out and impact young women all over the world.

BCT: What are your achievements?

NM: I have worked with a handful of national and international artists.

I have worked on sessions with Dollar Brand, the late Moses Molelekwa, and on the latest Family Factory album.

I have also worked with Ray Chew, a producer from London, on an album which features Kelly Williams.
