Remembering fallen heroes

The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moths) held a parade at the General van der Spuy Shellhole, in Northmead, on Sunday October 23.

The purpose of the parade was to commemorate the soldiers who fell in the crucial World War 2 battle of El Alamein, which was fought against German and Italian troops in Egyptian desert terrain in 1942.

Of the 13 500 British Commonwealth soldiers who died, went missing or were wounded in the battle, 509 were South African and 16 were Rhodesian.

The names of the missing are inscribed on the the El Alamein Memorial.

The General van der Spuy Shellhole has commemorated El Alamein since its inception in 1991, when the Shellhole had five El Alamein veterans – who fought at the North African battle – as members.
