Lakes Lions is a ‘model club’

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club is a “breath of fresh air”, according to the Lions 410B district governor, Bernd Gerhard.

Gerhard was speaking at the club’s monthly meeting recently, where he also inducted six new members.

This takes the Benoni Lakes Lions’ membership to 27.

President of the club, Nick Maré, said that, in February, 2015, the Benoni Lakes Lions had one member and was facing closure.

In June of the same year, the membership grew to 11 and, in November, there were 22 members.

Gerhard lauded the club for growing Lionism.

“It is clubs like these that will make our organisation grow, it is clubs like these that people will want to join,” said Gerhard.

“Obviously membership is very important; membership is a business.

“I really believe membership needs to be approached as a business.”

The district governor said that, in his district, 23 per cent of clubs have fewer than 15 members and that 59 per cent have fewer than 20 members, which is “scary”.

He explained that a decline in membership is largely due to affordability of Lions and conflict.

However, he added, membership in District 410b is on the up, with 39 clubs and 650 members.

He plans to have grown membership to 800 by the end of June, next year.

Maré said his club’s membership has grown as a result of allowing the young members to tackle projects in which they are interested and by sticking to his philosophy of doing “what you can, when you can and when you want to”.

The new members who joined the club are: Kathy Jack, Jeanne Woodman, Wayne Keefer, Dave Hayward, Renier Blignaut and Michelle t’Hart.
