Hospice needs more volunteers

Hospice East Rand held their 29th annual general meeting (AGM) on October 17, in Western Extension.

Along with the reports, they bade farewell to their patient care manager, Sheila Lebetla, who will be retiring in November.

“Hospice East Rand is a community-based organisation whose mission is to provide high quality, holistic and non-discriminatory care for those with life-limiting illnesses and their families,” said the chairman, Con Roux.

Several members of the organisation informed the rest of the staff and members on the current situation in each department within the organisation.

“Overall, Hospice needs to provide quality service,” Roux said.

Financial reports revealed that the organisation is currently running at a loss which is 74 per cent higher than 2015’s loss.

The loss in 2015 was R385 446 and 2016’s loss was R670 741.

Marion Lomberg, charity shop coordinator, thanked the managers and the public for their generosity to the 11 charity shops which are running well and effectively on the East Rand.

Currently, the charity shops are the organisation’s biggest income providers.

“We are also hosting a fête on November 5, at Hospice, and all are welcome to attend,” Lomberg said.

“It is a family day, where we will have several clothing and food stalls, along with entertainment for the entire family.”

Although the charity shops are stable and brought in 54 per cent of the revenue for 2016, Lomberg said they are in need of more volunteers to help the managers in the shops, as well as any donations from the public.

There are two Benoni charity shops; one in Rynfield, which is stable, however, the one in Kemston Avenue is in the process of possibly being relocated, as the sales are low during the afternoons.

Roux also mentioned that the name “Hospice” seemingly makes people feel uncomfortable, so the executive committee is considering changing the name to something more applicable.
