Weather highlights

Temperatures and rainfall:

Temperatures for this September were much the same as for the equivalent month last year.

A cold front arrived on September 17, with the usual low pressure preceding it (see Graph One) and winds backing through south west, south east and east, while some welcome rain (8.4mm) fell (see graphs one and two).

This gentle rain was the first spring rain.

Comparing the 2016 September rain with past records, the following emerges: average long-term average is 23.4mm, lowest rainfall is 0mm (on seven years since 1970) and highest is 172mm in 1987.

The outlook for rain in October could well be close to the long-term average of 71mm for the month!

This could see the end to the dry spell and (hopefully) water restrictions!

Winds:

The average wind speed for the month was 4.5km/h, mainly from the north.

The 53.1km/h wind at 9pm on Tuesday, September 27 (see Table One and Graph One), is classified as a moderate gale!
