Man shot dead after struggle with police over a gun

A 40-year-old man was shot dead after he got into a struggle with a police officer over a gun.

The incident occurred on September 27, in Etwatwa Extension Seven at around 2.30am.

According to Etwatwa Police Station commander Capt Pheello Mothapo, a 29-year-old man came to the police station to open a case of housebreaking and theft.

“The man alleged that the suspect stole his television and police went to the complainant’s house to see what had occurred,” said Mothapo.

“On arrival, at the house, the man pointed at the suspect and said he’s the one who stole his television.”

Mothapo said when police tried to arrest the suspect, he got into a struggle with one of the police officers and grabbed the officer’s gun.

“Both the police officer and the man fought over the gun,” said Mothapo.

“The suspect bit the officer’s hand and got possession of the gun.

“The other officer shot the alleged suspect in his lower body and he died on the scene.”

A case of housebreaking and theft was opened at the Etwatwa Police Station.
