Getting to know Benoni’s famous ice cream outlet

In about 1924, Marthys “Thys” and Nic Korsman both settled in Benoni, from the Netherlands.

In 1925 they established the Korsman’s Ice Cream factory, which was initially known as the A I Ice Cream factory, run by the then Messrs Korsman Brothers.

“A” is the first letter of the alphabet and “1”, the first numeral, therefore it indicated “The Best”.

Klaas, a carpenter, built the original factory, situated in Woburn Avenue.

Later it was extended to the corner of Woburn Avenue and Swan Street.

Messrs Korsman Brothers had a large fleet of horse-drawn carts, motor vehicles and cycle boxes, which were used to transport their products.

Each vehicle was packed with ice, which was made in the factory, and each horse worked and rested in the fields on alternate days.

Information supplied by Glynis Cox Millett-Clay.
