Dog killed with spade for attacking chickens

A dog was beaten to death with a spade for attacking his alleged attacker’s chickens, in Putfontein.

“The Benoni SPCA received a call at around noon, that someone had killed a dog with a spade,” Vicky Finnemore, Benoni SPCA manager said on Friday, September 23.

Zama Mabena (inspector) and Jesse Casper (trainee inspector) were sent out to the business, situated in Du Randt Road.

“When they arrived at the property, the man blatantly admitted that he had killed the dog, because it had killed one or more of his chickens,” Finnemore said.

“There were several eyewitnesses and one confirmed the man had hit the dog at least five times.

“He said he was sorry and would not do it again.”

Finnemore said the man was arrested and taken to Putfontein Police Station.

This could not be confirmed by the station’s spokesperson or commander at the time of publishing.

“We (Benoni SPCA) have opened a case of animal cruelty against the man, who is a worker on the property,” she added.

“The deceased animal was taken to a veterinarian, who confirmed it had died from trauma to the head.

“He could have brought the animal here, instead of killing it in this barbaric way.”

Finnemore said the owner of both the property and the dog, support the decision to press charges against the man.
