Councillors unable to do jobs efficiently

The issuing of laptops, stationery and offices to councillors has been a daunting task, according Ward 28’s Clr Malanie Haggard, but the process is now finally happening.

“Councillors have been in office for over a month, but we don’t have laptops and stationery to do our jobs properly,” she said.

According to Haggard, there is budget that has been allocated towards providing councillors with the necessary equipment and queries have been sent to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) for clarity on the matter.

“I have been using my personal laptop and email to get some work done, but some councillors don’t have personal laptops, which makes working harder,” she said.

“With more wards being added, more councillors were elected and the municipality should have made provision for all the additional changes.”

Councillors were allegedly instructed by the Speaker of the house to return their laptops to council by the end of August.

According to Haggard, councillors would be given new laptops for the new term, as the laptops of the previous term have lost their value.

The DA’s Deputy Chief Whip in Ekurhuleni, Jackie Reilly, said the delay is problematic.

“If residents don’t phone their ward councillors, they will send an email to them,” said Reilly.

According to Reilly, the EMM started with the rolling out of laptops to councillors on September 22.
