Brentwood Park taps run dry

Residents in Brentwood Park had sporadic water pressure for at least five days last week.

Members of the public said on Facebook that their taps have been dry during the day, since Thursday (September 1).

Roy Hayward, who lives in Village Walk Retirement Estate, said the water pressure returns every night at 10pm, but is gone again the following morning.

“It’s terrible; it smells like water [load] shedding to me,” he added.

“Older residents here suffer; most of them go to bed before 10pm, when the water returns.”

On September 2, several Benoni areas were reportedly left with low water pressure, as work was being conducted on pumps feeding into the water tower off Farrar Street, Northmead.

An outlet in Farrar Street was spewing out water on the day.

According to Ekurhuleni Metro engineers on site, this was overflow from the tower, as the pumps were continually filling it.

“The pumps communicate with the tower and automatically switch off, but something went wrong and they kept on pumping,” Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, said.

Clr Jacques Meiring (Ward 27) said the problem lay with the East Rand Water Care Company (Erwat), not the metro, so “our hands are, unfortunately, chopped off in terms of when we can have the problem fixed”.

He said, on September 5, that the repairs should be completed within a day.

Gadebe said: “Technicians are looking into the reported water interruption.

“Work is still being done on the pump at the reservoir in Kirschner Road.”

At the time of going to print, it was unclear what the reason was for the sporadic water pressure in Brentwood Park.

Meiring added that he wants residents to call or email him personally, regarding any leaks or wet spots in their area.

These are some of the comments on Facebook:

Nellie van Rensburg: It has probably run dry because maintenance work is being done to the electrical cables supplying electricity to the reservoirs.

Eugene Bunge: Is this in any way surprising, when so much water is wasted through leaks which remain unfixed for days and in some cases, weeks on end? Why should we, the community, be punished with water restrictions when the municipality does not give a hoot about doing what it gets paid to do?

Donné Repsold: Seriously… but water runs down the road and no one does anything about burst pipes. What about maintenance?

Nokubonga Katise: It is so frustrating.
