Salute sets off sailing season

Benoni Sailing Club celebrated the opening of the new sailing season on Sunday, September 4 at Homestead Dam.

Des Geraghty, the commodore, took the salute from all the sailors as they sailed past and wished the club well for a terrific sailing season.

The brightly coloured pennants flying on the commodore’s boat will be handed out to the race winners during the year, to be flown on their boats at the closing cruise.

After the sail-past, the first race of the season started and was won by Alex Thomson.

The club has been in existence for over 46 years and is open to experienced sailors as well a beginners who wish to learn the sport of sailing.

Geraghty said sailors can start from as young as eight years old and continue well into their late 70s, making this a lifelong sport.

A sailing school, based on the club premises provides lessons for beginners.

Dinghy racing takes place most Sundays and visitors and interested people are welcome to join in.
