The beginning of a new chapter

After about four months of construction, Benoni High School officially opened their newly-completed clubhouse, the Jake Ceronio Sports Centre, on the school premises on August 26.

Past pupils, teachers, principals and members of the governing body attended the prestigious opening.

Captains of various sporting teams took part in a march led by the school’s pipe band.

A sense of pride filled the pupils as the building was opened.

The building stands at about 1 000m2 in size, with two kitchens, a function room, boardroom, change rooms, a cafeteria and a balcony, along with a specific area set out for sports rehabilitation for athletes.

This multi-purpose building is one of the many ideas Jake Ceronio, principal of Benoni High School, has had as a way of improving the school.

“It’s such a privilege to be part of the history of the school,” said architectural technologist Leon Havemann, the designer of the clubhouse.

In his opening address to the school, Ceronio said: “This building will be a beacon of education in Ekurhuleni and Benoni.

“It is a celebration of youth, sports and neighbourliness.”

According to Ceronio, the centre will be a place where parents and past pupils can visit to support their children in the various sporting activities that take place on the school grounds.

Arbor Primary School principal Patrick Arentsen, said: “This is magnificent, well done.

“This is good for the children; sport is always good for children.”
