Fallen police officers remembered

Gauteng police commissioner Lieut-Gen Deliwe de Lange officially unveiled the first Wall of Remembrance in the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster on August 18.

The purpose of the wall, at the Actonville Police Station, is to honour 12 police officers who have died while working at the station, since 2008.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster commander Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah welcomed family members and guests to the Wall of Remembrance, which is the first of its kind in Ekurhuleni Cluster.

“This wall reflects that the SAPS family will always care, now and in the future,” he said.

“The CPF chairpersons past and present have made this day possible.”

Subbiah added that Col Fredl Jonck (Actonville SAPS station commander) and his members have shown that team work is existent.

Former Actonville CPF chairperson Selvan Naidoo said the day of the unveiling was very emotional.

“It is time that we go back in life and honour our loved ones who have departed,” he added.

“Your tears have touched our hearts and brought tears in our eyes.”

Naidoo added that a you will never understand the pain you go through until you lose a loved one.

“Let us not forget our fallen members; they have served our community with love,” he said.

“One loss of a police officer is a loss to the entire nation.”

The SAPS band and drill squad played sweet harmonies as the ceremony proceeded.

De Lange said these members have paid with their lives to make sure that they served and protected the community.

“They may be gone, but they are not forgotten,” said de Lange.

“Their work will always be remembered; their sacrifices were not in vain.”

She emphasised that we cannot afford to lose any more police officers.

Five of the 12 officers were attacked and killed while on duty.

“We must stand together and say no to police killings,” she said.

The bereaved families received certificates in honour of the deceased police officers.
