Six-year-old drowns in swimming pool

A six-year-old boy drowned in a communal swimming pool on Sunday (August 14), in New Modder.

Max Coen, Emer-G-Med spokesperson, said paramedics found the boy lying next to the swimming pool on arrival.

“He showed no signs of life,” he added.

“Paramedics immediately initiated a full advanced life support resuscitation.

“Unfortunately, despite prolonged resuscitation efforts, the child was later declared dead on the scene.”

According to Athlenda Mathe, Netcare 911 media liaison officer, bystanders informed paramedics that the child might have been in the pool for several hours.

“A passerby saw a pair of shoes beside the pool, but no one was nearby,” she said.

“The body was not floating and the water was reportedly not clear enough to see the child.”

Netcare 911 arrived on the scene at about 5pm.
