Listen to the birds

I am also very concerned about the forever increasing off-road activity over on the western bank area, where the flamingos like to gather, feed and forage.

The noise levels are particularly concerning.

Already we can note that there are changes in the bird behaviour patterns – breeding cycles are changing rapidly.

Another concern I have come to note is that the flock of seagulls have now taken virtually permanent residence on the pan areas.

It appears that the grey-headed seagulls come from the area that is now in process of being landfilled nearby the airport technical areas (on Atlas Road).

The impacts of rapid urbanisation and the unsustainable building in pan areas, coupled to motorised, noisy activity is impacting the birdlife in many ways.

The birds are the indicator species.

We are obviously not heeding to the crying call of the birdsong.

I can only imagine the day when we do not hear the beautiful sounds of the gathering seagulls in the early morning and late evenings.

We need to take note of what the birds are actually trying to tell us, before it is too late.
