New Ward 73 councillor plans to serve all

Sinethemba Matiwana of the DA won Ward 73, which was previously held by ANC councillor Samuel Ngobese.

The DA received 49.53 percent of the vote (9 516 votes), with the ANC getting 38.26 (7 352 votes).

The EFF came in with 6.7 per cent (1 287 votes).

“I am humbled that the community chose me as their leader,” Matiwana said.

“I will establish partnerships with the community and ensure that I am constantly ‘on the ground’ working with them.”

Matiwana said, as part of “working on the ground”, his first goal is to make himself visible and accessible to the community.

“The community needs to know that I am here to serve them and that they can call on me when they need help,” he added.

“It is all about them and I need to assist them.”

One of the main challenges Matiwana said he as a councillor may face is that the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) is still controlled by the ANC, so he is still dependent on the officials to do the work.

However, he will do his best to serve the entire community, which he has experience in doing based on previous positions he held in government departments.
