Work begins to ensure ‘stable supply of power’

Work to ensure a “stable supply of power” in Benoni has begun, the municipality said.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe said a new medium voltage switchgear will be fitted at the Rynfield Substation.

“The process is expected to be completed on Sunday (July 24),” said Gadebe.

“This upgrade requires the substation to be completely shut down during installation.

“Customers feeding from Rynfield Substation are temporarily fed from alternative substations in the Benoni electricity distribution network.”

Gadebe said a “dedicated” team has been put on standby to attend to any potential power outages that may arise.

Areas supplied from the Rynfield Substation that are now supplied through alternative substations are:

•Chief Albert Luthuli Park
•Cloverdene
•Crystal Park
•Ebotse Golf and Country Estate
•Linmed Hospital
•Rynfield Area (Parker, Honiball, Robinson, Lessing, Grybe streets)
•The entire Rynpark area

The EMM apologised for the inconvenience caused.

Meanwhile, Crystal Park residents complained of power interruption at the weekend.

Some took to the Benoni City Times Facebook page on July 17 to vent their frustration.

Sindie Siems: Seriously! Seems like the whole of South Africa has got electricity except for Benoni, especially Crystal Park. There is no consistency, no notice, no accountability. Yes, the cables are being replaced but at least give an indication which area in Crystal Park will be off at what time. We have kids and businesses to run.

Tania De Klerk: Electricity has been off in Crystal Park for 18 hours. It is extremely frustrating. Alarms and all back up batteries are flat, not to mention what electrical appliances have been damaged. I really can’t keep up with extra fuel costs for running generators and buying take outs.

Liz Toerien: Yes, off in Crystal Park since Friday afternoon except for an hour here and there. Still off now and absolutely no idea when it shall return. Pathetic service, no regular updates and just a general feeling of despair!
