He wants to replicate your home

Being poor makes you think.

This is what Isaac Ngonyama (26) said inspires him to do more to make a success of his life.

A month ago the young man from Daveyton began to think of innovative ways to make money, and the idea to make little model houses came to mind.

“I had been getting piece jobs here and there, but those are temporary,” he said

Ngonyama said he had been sitting at home thinking of how to make money for food and to help the family he stays with, when he thought to combine his love of creating things with his hands and his ability to make them.

He wants to make a better life for himself and to help his adoptive mother, Ella Mashego, who has accepted him into her home and church, where he stays.

“I made a school project for my younger sister, Busisiwe Masindane (16), last year, which was a house that had a windmill outside,” he said.

He makes the houses using cardboard, glue, sand, long grass, a cement-like substance, paint and whatever else can help to make the final product as close to perfect as possible.

He buys the material from a shop in Benoni, which, he said, can be costly.

His plan is for customers to send pictures of their homes to him, in order for him to replicate the design.

The first time Ngonyama made his homes known was at an open market held at the All Souls Church, in Northmead, recently.

He sells his houses at between R100 to R400, depending on the size of the construction.

“My dream is to have more customers; if I could get more people who want me to make the houses for them, that would make me very happy,” he said.

Ngonyama said he enjoys what he does and wakes up early in the morning and finishes late in the evening to get the job done.

“When I do something I am determined to finish it then and there,” he explained.
