Jurita Bakery turns 50

Jurita Bakery and Food Emporium turned 50 years old earlier this year.

Situated on the corner of Second Street and Sixth Avenue, Northmead, the bakery has a rich history.

It has been owned by E Kongas since 1969.

He and A Diasakos bought it from Angelo Mafilas and his wife, Rita, who owned it in 1966, together with their partner, Judy.

They named the business Jurita, with the “Ju” for “Judy” and “Rita” for Angelo’s wife’s name.

The business moved to its current location in November 1979, after previously being situated at 23 Second Street.

The building which the bakery currently occupies was built in 1932 and was the premises of Northmead Trading Stores in the early days.
