Lorraine Jones will be missed

Lorraine Jones, a long-time resident of Benoni, died peacefully in the Netcare Linmed Hospital on June 22 at the age of 87.

Jones was born on March 22, 1929, in Kimberley to Henry and Irene Perrin.

Her family moved up to the East Rand when she was 11, where they stayed in Primrose where Jones completed her schooling at Germiston High School.

After leaving school she worked at the Johannesburg Post Office and thereafter at The Star newspaper for several years.

She married Douglas Jones, who served in World War Two and the Korean War, in 1955.

They then lived in Kensington, Johannesburg, for five years, during which they welcomed two daughters, Glenda Endres and Kathleen Malan into their lives.

After moving to Edenvale for a short period, the Jones family made their way to Benoni in 1965 and lived in Northmead and Farrarmere.

Jones worked as a secretary and PA until her retirement; she then stayed at home to take care of her husband who was ailing and to spend time with her beloved grandchildren.

Her husband died in 2001 and her youngest daughter, Kathleen, died in 2010.

“Both deaths left a huge hole in her life and she then focused on her remaining family even more,” said Glenda.

Jones is remembered as a great reader; she would read at least eight library books a month.

She also loved watching cricket while knitting for family and for charity.

Her daughter said crossword puzzles “kept her brain sharp” and that the telephone was her fondest toy.

“She also had been a great ballroom dancer in her younger days and her biggest regret was not being able to dance any more,” Glenda said.

After a serious colon operation four years ago, Jones’ health deteriorated, necessitating a live-in caregiver, Eunice, who was a blessing to the family.

Nearly a month ago, Jones fell and broke her hip.

After a successful hip replacement, she then developed pneumonia and died on Wednesday, June 22.

She is survived by her daughter Glenda, son-in-law Gavin and grandchildren Rogan Endres, Jessica Endres and Shannon Swanepoel.

Her family said she lived a long life that was well lived.

The funeral was held at 11am on Tuesday, June 28, at the Northfield Methodist Church.
