Four arrested, R600 000 in matches recovered

Four people were arrested for the possession of a hijacked truck, and stolen matches to the value of R600 000.

The arrest took place at a plot in Cloverdene on July 1, at 8pm.

“Acting on a tip-off, the EMPD K9 Unit members were able to recover an articulated truck hijacked earlier in day in Pretoria,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago.

“The truck was drawing two trailers fully-laden with matches valued at R600 000.”

Kgasago said the suspects were caught “red handed” unloading from the hijacked truck onto a four-tonne truck.

“Although they claimed they were hired to do the unpacking and loading of the cargo and claimed ignorance as to the hijacking, the metro police arrested them,” Kgasago added.

“A sophisticated jammer with eight aerials was found still connected to the idling hijacked truck’s batteries to jam the tracker signal.”

The four suspects, aged between 22 and 42, were charged with possession of a hijacked truck as well as possession of stolen goods.

They are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on Monday (July 4).
